Summary of Carpentry

A carpenter is an tradesman who carries out various industrial jobs and plays an important role in construction by providing all woodworks to the building. The carpenter also carries out making of all furniture and other wood structures from raw wood.

History of the position

A Carpenters' job in the twenty first century has become very vast and now many countries require a formal education in carpentry trades and at present there are various carpentry jobs available to these tradesman.

Carpenter duties and responsibilities

The essential duties of the carpenter include making a design of the product, cutting, making and finishing different wood products. Also, there are many areas where the specialized carpenters are required. On the basis of the job these carpenters are known as rough carpenter, trim carpenter, finish carpenter, cabinetmaker, ship’s carpenter etc. The carpenter plays a significant role in modern industrial construction. The look of modern buildings can be made excellent by providing beautiful woodwork. These industrial tradesmen are really backbone of not only industrial construction but also whole of the nation.

Depending on some situations, the carpenter may have to work in heights. A carpenter should be ready to work under extremely variable environments such as from extremely hot to extremely cold conditions. The industrial jobs will also include working in chemical environments and may also be asked to work in shifts.

The responsibilities of carpenters includes the understanding design features of the woodwork fully and delivery of the product in time. A rough carpenter may not be able to work so beautifully as a finish carpenter especially if working on cabinet making or finishing furniture, in such a case you should not accept the work.

Carpenter Supervisory Position

As a supervisor in the craft of carpentry, your responsibility is to ensure the correct and accurate making of different wood products such a doors, windows etc as per the design provided to you to the building. You will also be responsible for delivering all instructions to your subordinates and you will be guiding them in performing their job.

If any of the subordinate industrial craftsmen do not understand the assigned task, the craftsman or carpenter can directly contact to their supervisors for further details. All technical and mathematical aspects should be clearly understood by the subordinates before initiating the job.

Carpenter Certification and Schooling

If you want to become a carpenter you should have through at least a formal schooling. You may take some time to learn carpentry from an experienced and established carpenter.

Specialized Carpenter Training

Now a days many countries require a formal apprentice and certificate course from an accredited school in the carpentry craft. You can join a school where you will get a craftsman certificate and you will be eligible to get a job as carpenter in many construction companies and other fields where the job of carpenter is required.

Average Salary of a Carpenter

As per data of US labor department for the year 2004, average hourly earning of carpenters were $16.78. However an experienced carpenter earned an average of $28.65 for the same period. With the time the salaries in this trade will increase and according to the figure shown mentioned by US labor department one third of carpenter are doing their own business.
